The basics
When you file a VA disability claim, you need a medical professional to confirm your condition is connected to your military service. That written confirmation is called a nexus letter.
The word "nexus" means "connection." A nexus letter links your current health condition to your time in the military, using medical evidence and specific language the VA requires.
The key phrase: "It is at least as likely as not that this veteran's condition is caused by their military service." This specific language is required by VA regulations (38 CFR 3.303).
Why most claims get denied without one
The number one denial reason is lack of a medical nexus. Even if the connection seems obvious, the VA needs a clinician to say it in writing with supporting evidence.
